# Web requests

> Get data from other websites and apps.

Sometimes your bot needs something from **another website**, like the weather, a game score or an order from your shop. A **web request** asks that website for it.

## The web request block

The **web request block** sends a request to another website or app (an **API**). You can build the request **from scratch**, or start from a **ready template**. Search `request` in the block list to find it.

The answer from the website then flows into the blocks after it.

> [!NOTE]
>
> A web request can only reach normal web addresses (the normal web ports).

## Keep your keys secret

Many websites ask for a password called an **API key**. Never type it straight into a block. Save it as a **secret** and use the secret in the block instead. The builder's **Secrets** panel shows your secrets. See [Secrets](/connections/secrets).

## Other ways to talk to the outside world

> Let other websites send things **to** your bot.

> **[WhatsApp: Apps and services](/whatsapp/apps-and-services)**
>
> On WhatsApp, **Send to an app** sends data and gives back `{app_reply}`.

See the block's settings in [Web request blocks](/block-library/web-request-blocks).
