# Events

> Make your bot react to things that happen.

An **event** is something that happens on its own in your server. Your bot can **listen** for it and do something when it happens. DogeBot has **more than 100** events to pick from.

## Some examples

| When this happens | Your bot could... |
| - | - |
| Someone **joins** the server | Send a welcome card and give them a role. See [Welcome and goodbye](/build-a-system/welcome-and-goodbye). |
| Someone **leaves** | Say goodbye in a channel. |
| Someone **sends a message** | Give them XP. See [Levels and XP](/build-a-system/levels-and-xp). |
| Someone **adds a reaction** | Give them a role. |
| A **timer** rings | Post a message. See [Scheduled messages](/build-a-system/scheduled-messages). |

## How to make an event

<Steps>
  <Step title="Make a new event">
    Press **Events** in the sidebar, then **New event**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick what it listens for">
    The event list has groups down the side, starting with **All events**. Pick a group, or type in **Search events** to find one fast, like `join` or `message`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add blocks">
    The Event Builder opens. Add **Steps** and **Checks** under the first block and connect them, just like a command. Events have no Inputs, because nobody types anything.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save and switch it on">
    Press **Save**. Make sure the event is switched **on** in your Events list.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Switching events on and off

Use the switch next to an event in the **Events** list or in the builder's side list. An event that is off shows **"Off, it won't run"** and does nothing until you switch it on again. It takes about **10 seconds** to take effect.

## Timed events

A **timed event** runs by itself on a clock. Make one in the builder's **Timed Events** panel:

* **Interval**: again and again, every so many seconds, minutes, hours or days (at least 10 seconds).
* **Schedule**: once a day at a time in **UTC**, and **Only on** the weekdays you pick.

Then pick it as the trigger of an event. Full guide: [Scheduled messages](/build-a-system/scheduled-messages).

## Things to know

* For **message** events, turn on the **Message Content Intent** in the Discord Developer Portal.
* For **join and leave** events, turn on the **Server Members Intent**.
* Not working? Open [Error Logs](/the-builders/error-logs).
