# Run-only values

> Values that only last while your command or event is running.

Sometimes you need a box **just for a moment**, like a sticky note you throw away when you are done. You do not want it on the Database page forever.

For this there is the **Set a unique variable** block.

## How it works

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add the block">
    Find **Set a unique variable** in the block list (type `unique` into the search). Drag it onto the board.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Give it a name">
    Type a **Name**, like `my_value`. The block shows a **Needed** badge until it has a name.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Give it a value">
    Type a **Value**, like `hello {user_name}`. Use the { } **Variables** button to add other values.

    If you leave the value **empty**, DogeBot puts in a brand new **unique ID**. That is handy when you need a code nobody else has, like a ticket number.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the sentence">
    Under the settings, **What this block will do** tells you in plain words what happens, for example: "Sets {my_value} to hello {user_name} for this run."
  </Step>
</Steps>

Now every block **after** it can use `{my_value}`.

## Good to know

* The value **only lasts for this run**. The next time the command is used, it starts fresh.
* Use the **same name again** later in the same run to change it.
* The **Get a key** choice in Save a value also keeps a value for the rest of the run, like `{my_coins}`.

## When to use which

| You want to... | Use |
| - | - |
| Remember something **forever** (coins, levels) | A custom variable (`{DBVAR_...}`) |
| Hold something **only during this run** (a total you are working out, a ticket code) | **Set a unique variable** |
